As of the 2007-2008 school year, Wisconsin's schools were home to more than 47,000 English language learners (ELLs), which marks a 136.6% increase from the 1997-1998 school year (NCELA, 2010). The top five languages or language groups spoken by ELLs in Wisconsin are Spanish, Hmong, German, French, and Chinese (EPE, 2009).
Wisconsin was the lead state of WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment) when it was created in 2003. WIDA is a consortium of states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English language learners which offers states programming for identifying and annually assessing the English language development of its English learners.
In East Troy, we work to provide English language learners with resources within their classrooms in order to support their educational needs. We offer an inclusive model with supplementary English supports through targeted interventions and accommodations for students who are learning English.
