At the East Troy Community School District, we believe that learning begins long before a child enters kindergarten and we’re here to support families every step of the way. Our goal is to build strong, positive connections with families of children, birth to 4, helping lay a solid foundation for lifelong learning and success.
We offer resources and guidance that support every area of early development, physical, social, emotional, behavioral, motor, and cognitive, ensuring that children are meeting key milestones and are ready for school. By partnering with families early, we aim to set the stage for each child to experience a year or more of academic growth every year they’re with us.
What is Child Find?
Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness, screening, and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and refer children with disabilities who may need early intervention or special education services. In Wisconsin, children birth to age 3 may qualify for early intervention through county Birth to 3 programs, while children ages 3 to 21 may be eligible for special education services through their local school district.
Why is Child Find Important?
Child Find ensures that all children with disabilities have access to a free and appropriate public education (FAPE), including the special education and related services they need to succeed. Screening helps determine if a child’s development is age-appropriate and supports early identification and intervention.
Who is Covered?
Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), all children residing in Wisconsin who may need special education services must be identified, located, and evaluated. All screenings and evaluations are provided at no cost to families.

As a part of our ongoing Child Find efforts, the district hosts a Child Developmental Screening Day in January for children ages birth to 5 years old with development concerns. We encourage families, childcare providers, and/or physicians who have concerns about a young child to recommend the screening or bring the child to the screening, where children will participate in a variety of activities with district staff in a play-based setting where speech and language, preschool readiness, fine and gross motor, self-help, and social skills will be observed. Call Jennifer Marcinkevic at 262.642.6710 x1276 for more information or to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are also welcome. If you are unable to attend the screening and your child attends daycare in East Troy, please contact us to complete the screening at your child's daycare. We look forward to meeting our community's youngest learners! |
