Curriculum and Instruction

In the East Troy Community School District, our mission is to provide 21st century learning through engaged student learning, quality teaching, strong leadership, rigorous coursework and community service opportunities while demonstrating efficiency and effectiveness for the betterment of the students and the community.  Each and every year, we work to ensure that our mission is a living part of our schools and our classrooms.  We continue to focus on the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, rigorous standards in math and language arts that promote college and career readiness.  We are working to align resources and materials with the Common Core State Standards, teachers are designing lessons that actively engage students, promote problem solving skills, connect concepts to real world experiences and foster creativity.  We use standards as the foundation for teaching and learning which allows teachers to identify and communicate learning targets or explicit goals for daily instruction.  These daily targets highlight essential skills, concepts and knowledge and provide a clear focus for the development of assessments.

As we continue to grow and evolve, we recognize that our work has only just begun.  In addition to the Common Core State Standards, teachers will begin to learn about the newly released Next Generation Science Standards which encourage the acquisition and application of scientific knowledge so that students can increase their understanding of the world.  We will dedicate professional development hours to the creation of learning targets, lessons and assessments based on these standards. Teachers will also focus on utilizing assessment results to identify student need and tailor instruction to meet those needs.

In addition to the implementation of rigorous standards, we will develop and provide programming opportunities that focus on student growth, recognize talents and create individualized experiences.  At the elementary level, we have begun to implement uninterrupted math and reading blocks which will allow grade level teachers to group students based on need and deliver instruction that addresses the development of specific skills.  Fourth and fifth grade students are participating in a project-based learning class that integrates writing, speaking and listening standards with topics studied as part of the science and social studies curriculum.

East Troy Middle School is providing the opportunity for students to take part in a robotics class, learn about world cultures and develop their talents by offering opportunities for students to take part in music and art.  In addition, staff collaboration is focused on the integration of technology across the curriculum.  The high school continues to increase course offerings through the addition of Accelerated Biology, a team taught Algebra course, the Technology Integration Squad and our first Project Lead the Way course, Introduction to Engineering Design.
